Southwestern Colorado's Prize Destination For Hunting Elk, Bear and Deer

Reservations & Information

The Timberwood Ranch

This area has long been popular with hunters because of the abundant wildlife. The Lone Cone Mountain, at 12,000', stands majestically overlooking Groundhog Lake and this 2150 acre privately owned ranch. Near Timberwood Ranch is two million acres of San Juan National Forest with a wide variety of terrain and wildlife. The ranch has been a sheep ranch and more recently grazing land for cattle. The family has endeavored to maintain the land as an undeveloped and pristine area.

Prime Big Game Hunting

Whether you hunt elk, bear or deer you will find the big game you track at the Timberwood Ranch. With approximately 2000 private acres (D.O.W. Unit #71) located a couple of miles from the San Juan National Forest, you will have a vast and varied terrain to hunt your quarry. For information, hunt availability and to contact us, see the reservations page.

The Hunting Landscape

Hunting this property is relatively easy with elevations ranging from 8500-9500'. Several blinds overlooking stock ponds are accessed via pick-up truck or ATV's. All of the property is fenced and posted. Oak brush and stands of Quaking Aspen separated by meadows best characterize the landscape. The San Juan National Forest begins a few miles east of the ranch. There is a large number of elk in this region. Four to five point elk are the norm. Resident elk spend the summers and fall on the property and the number increases in the fall and early winter when elk migrate off the National Forest. Large herds pass through this area on their way to the winter range along the CO-UT border. Hunting success nearly always depends on weather conditions. To preserve the pristine nature of the area, only a limited number of hunters will be allowed each season.
